Children's House Montessori Toddler Program
Curriculum:
The CHMS Toddler program is an amazing opportunity for toddlers in families who follow Montessori guiding principles to spend the day in a carefully prepared environment that supports those principles. (i.e. functional independence (how to do things for themselves)
such as walking, talking, toileting, dressing, etc.)
The Toddler program is a complete Montessori curriculum for children 18 months to 3 years old. It is often a child’s first opportunity to interact with different people and activities other than within their own family. This helps the child begin to establish a sense of individuality with which they can relate to others and have social interaction, thus fostering a new stage of independence through new attachments and experiences. The activities which allow the child to do this are grouped as follows:
Practical Life
This area includes things humans do every day to care for themselves and their environment (such as food preparation, toileting, etc.). The child recognizes their needs and how to satisfy them. The child begins to receive ideas of self-worth and sees himself as an important part of the community. These activities encourage gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination,
and concentration.
Manipulatives
These materials help the child develop their hand-eye coordination, coordination of using two hands together, movement coordination, balance, and gross and fine motor refinement.
Language
In the toddler environment, the children are immersed in language. Various 3-D objects, books and pictures are provided to help give the children the vocabulary to speak and comprehend the abstract aspects of the words. The Toddler class is also introduced to French language instruction.
Music and Movement
Music is a form of communication, and instruments are used to allow the children to see emotion in a physical form. Recorded music is played to provide the children with the opportunity to dance.
Expressive Materials
Art is seen as a process, not just product-oriented. These materials help the children express themselves and the use of two hands working together.
The Toddler program at CHMS is limited to only 15 students. As it is our goal to provide Montessori environments to families who are committed to following Montessori principles, it is the expectation that students enrolled in the CHMS Toddler program will be continuing at CHMS to at least the
end of the third year of Casa.
The Toddler Program at Children’s House is licensed and inspected by
The Ministry of Children and Youth Services. It meets or exceeds all provincial requirements. Tuition fees can be claimed as child care expenses.
