Welcome to CHMS

Dear Parents,

We welcome you and your child (ren) to The Children’s House Montessori School.

In order to ensure the safety, welfare and happiness of the children, we would appreciate your efforts to familiarize yourself with the policies of the school and your cooperation in maintaining them. We strongly recommend that you set up a special Montessori file where you can keep this booklet and any other pertinent information that is sent home, available to refer to.

The Children's House Montessori School is enrolled in the Canada-Wide Early Learning Childcare Credit (CWELCC) program. This means that currently 52.75% of the fees for both the Toddler and Casa programs are paid for by the Federal government.

Children’s House Montessori School follows Maria Montessori’s time-proven approach to early learning. Dr. Montessori’s method is continually being validated through neuroscience research and has been implemented in all CHMS programs from Toddler to Elementary since our inception in 1994. This programming is consistent with the Ministry of Education’s policy statement on programming and pedagogy issued under subsection 55(3) of the Child Care and Early Years Act. “How Does Learning Happen: Ontario Pedagogy for the Early Years” (2014).

CHMS offers quality Montessori programs that create rich learning environments for children to flourish within a living curriculum that truly reflects the interests and needs of the children enrolled in the program. We follow Maria Montessori’s view that all children are competent, capable, curious, and rich in potential. We believe it is our task to provide an environment, both tangible and intangible, that helps facilitate every child to reach that potential.

Our Program Statement

CHMS promotes the health, safety, nutrition, and well-being of the children in our care. Our bright, well-organized home-like environments are filled with many living things and are always fully equipped with complete sets of Montessori materials accessible to the children. The implementation of individual and small group lessons promotes a calm environment with few distractions. Our outdoor environment is fully enclosed and includes gardens, playground equipment and different surfaces (grass, gravel, concrete and turf) to allow for different activities. It meets all Canadian Playground Standards requirements and is regularly maintained and inspected. CHMS provides nutritious, made-on-site meals which follow Canada’s Food Guide recommendations. Staff provide discussion on nutritious and healthy eating and set a good example. CHMS follows proper hygiene and sanitary procedures as outlined by the Durham Region Health Department. Any and all allergies, dietary restrictions and individual anaphylaxis policies are made known to all staff, as well as being posted in the school. CHMS staff are all First Aid and CPR trained.

CHMS supports positive and responsive interactions between children, parents and educators. Our educators are trained in the Montessori Method by the Association Montessori Internationale (the only Montessori training founded by Maria Montessori). Many also have degrees and diplomas in child development and are encouraged and supported to view their professional development as ongoing. All are members of AMI Canada, and those trained as ECEs belong to the College of ECEs as well. They know that young children flourish in all areas of development when they are in supportive, caring, and responsive relationships with adults who respect them and support them as they strive to become independent. The adults and children are seen as co-learners. Our educators reflect on successes, document the children’s learning and communicate regularly with parents.

CHMS encourages the children to interact and communicate in a positive way through caring guidance and role modelling of appropriate responses. Students are treated respectfully and allowed freedom and choices based on their level of self-regulation. Each child is viewed as an individual, and staff demonstrate patience and kindness while encouraging students to make good choices for themselves and to treat others as they would like to have others treat them.
